Crackling noises are another result of the mineral build up after years of use. When the water heats, it expands and collides with the minerals that have collected over the years. The sound that results from this resembles gravel rolling around. This will also make your water smell strange from the metal fatigue to your tank.

This is one of the most obvious signs that your hot water heater is going bad. Not only this, but it is one of the final signs you’ll see, so it’s imperative that you call us right away. A collection of water around the heater means the corrosion from inside the tank has managed to eat its way through the steel.
