Plumbing problem? They aren’t uncommon, and as occasional problems spring up, you need to do something about it quickly (especially if you’re trying to repair a plumbing mishap in the middle of the night!) The good news is, sometimes a plumbing problem can be fixed with just a few tools and a little bit of knowledge on what you’re doing!
Below we have listed three of the most common plumbing problems you might encounter and how to fix them:
1. Low Water Pressure
Usually low water pressure is a fault with the sink taps. Start by checking to see if both the hot and cold taps are both affected by low pressure, and if so, check the aerator. You may find calcium deposits have built up inhibiting the flow of water. This is a problem that has built up over time. Fortunately, a blocked aerator is easy to fix. Just remove the aerator, clean out any scale and debris, and put it back. Now, you can retry the taps to see if the water is flowing properly.
If low pressure is apparent elsewhere in the house, also check the main stopcock, as this regulates the water pressure throughout the home. A small adjustment may be all that is needed to restore the water pressure.
2. Blocked or Partially Blocked Sink
A slow draining or blocked sink is probably the most common plumbing problem of all. If the sink has a filter, clean this first as it may be blocked with hair or debris. If this doesn’t work, try using a plunger. Place the plunger over the drain and press down firmly and repeatedly. Often the suction of the plunger is enough to remove small blockages. If this also fails to work, look under the sink and locate the U bend.
Place a bucket under the U bend, unscrew it, and remove. This may collecting debris which has built up over a long period of time. Clean the U bend, and screw it back. Test the sink before removing the bucket to ensure the U bend isn’t leaking. If the U bend continues to leak, re-tighten the fittings.
3. Slow Draining Bathtub
A slow draining bath is another common plumbing problem that can be easily fixed. The usual culprit is hair clogging the drain. This can often be removed just with the fingers or with a stout needle. A knitting needle is ideal for this particular job. If the blockage is deeper down in the pipe, often a rubber plunger will shift the obstruction. It may take several vigorous pumps with the plunger. You’ll know when the obstruction clears as the water will suddenly run away. Afterward, run the hot tap to ensure the obstruction is completely cleared. If the water is still running slowly, try the plunger again until it clears completely.
