What Is A Slab Leak?
During the construction process, pipes are fitting to run through concrete slabs. On occasion, these pipes will spring a leak and that is what is known as a “slab leak.” Conversely, leaks in pipes in attics or above a home or business are called “pinhole leaks.”
How Do I Know I Have A Slab Leak?
There are a variety of indicators of a slab leak. Here are a few:
- Cracks in your wall or baseboards
- A significant increase in water bills
- Warm spots on the floors (especially if the hot water line has burst)
- Moisture or mildew on carpets or raising or bubbling under linoleum or floating floors
Why Do I Have A Leak?
Slab leaks are caused by different things, but most of them are caused by corrosion. This usually happens due to the age of the pipes. Other causes include abrasion (from pipes rubbing together or against another surface) or pressure problems (crushed pipes or instances of high pressure). Shoddy installation during the construction phase of the project can also cause leaks.
How Do You Fix It?
After you’ve called D&D, we will send out an experienced technician to determine if you do, in fact, have a slab leak. We will conduct a water pressure test and identify the problem areas. At that point, we’ll be able to determine the best form of action. There are several ways to correct the slab leak, from pipe re-routes to direct access, and we want to make sure that we’ve chosen the best option for you. Some insurance companies will also help with slab leak costs, though you will need to discuss your policy with your insurance.
