Can you believe how hot the weather has been recently? It’s only April and the temps have already been climbing. Utility bills often increase during months with extreme weather. However, ceiling fans can provide a lot of cooling relief on sweltering days. We’re sharing ways that you can save (both money and discomfort) with ceiling fans.
Comfortable Savings
Running your air conditioner non-stop is one of the fastest ways to rack up a big utility bill. By installing and using a ceiling fan, you’re able to turn up your thermostat a few degrees. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, bumping up your thermostat 7-10° for eight hours each day can help you save up to 10% on your utility bills annually.
Since the weather recently has been warm but not sweltering (as it usually is in July and August), a ceiling fan can help you cool down and keep you from running the air conditioner 24/7.
(don’t forget: D&D can help install a programmable thermostat for you to help you regulate your home temperatures better)
Comfortable Cooling
Fewer things are more uncomfortable that trying to cool down when the air is stagnant. Did you know that ceiling fans are the most effective type of air circulators? Scientifically speaking, at medium and high levels, fans provide a wind chill effect. The wind chill effect is a noticeable feeling of cooling when the body is exposed to air flow. For example, imagine two 30° days…one with no wind and one with 30mph gusts. One feels considerably colder than the other, right? That’s the wind chill effect.
Additionally, ceiling fans assist in cooling your body down by evaporating moisture from your skin quickly and effectively. When you pair a ceiling fan with your air conditioning, you can actually bump up the thermostat 3-5° without feeling a difference
Choose A Comfortable Blade Size
Imagine trying to cool a warehouse with a simple floor fan. That seems like an impossible feat! Like this example, it’s important to remember that the size of the fan should correspond with the size of the room you want to cool. Smaller blades don’t circulate as much air and produce less cool air than longer blades. It is recommended to let the size of a room be your guide:
Fan Diameter:
36-44 inches are suited for rooms up to 225 square feet, or 15-by-15 feet.
52 inches or bigger work best in larger rooms.
By installing the right ceiling fan and using it, you’re able to save more money and keep cool during warm months. It’s having your ice cream…and eating it, too!
