During the past summer months, household air conditioning units have really been put to the test; as well as your bank account.  As the temperatures outside rise it’s inevitable that both your air conditioning use and electric bill increase. But for homeowners there is a silver lining. Let’s look at some ways that you can reduce the burden of high electricity costs with a few simple actions.

Five ways to cut down on cooling costs:

  1. Change those filters often-Many of us lead very busy lives and often neglect to timely change our air conditioner filters.  This can cause dust and dirt to build up and clog up the airflow making your air conditioner operate at a higher level and increasing your electric bill. By replacing your filter once every 30 days you will ensure proper airflow is getting through your system.
  2. Have a maintenance plan in place-A properly working unit is an efficient unit.  Once a year before (preferably before the summer months) it’s a good idea to have your local air conditioner repair company to come and take a look at your air conditioner. This will ensure that everything is working properly, as well as save you money.  An added savings to having a maintenance plan in place will save you money by reducing the risk for costly breakdowns (which often occurs during non business hours).
  3. Turn off your unit while not at home-This is a great way to save money while you’re not at home. There is no need to cool a home if no one is there to enjoy it.  This will save you tons of money, especially in West Texas heat.
  4. Use your ceiling fans-If you happen to have ceiling fans in your house like most people, turn them on.  This will allow air to circulate properly and keep your house cooler.  This will reduce the amount of time your air conditioner is running, in turn saving money in cooling costs.
  5. Replace those older units-Replacing your old unit with a new one might seem like a large upfront cost.  However, it’s worth the money you will save in the long term. Today, there are lots of energy efficient air conditioner units available. So if your unit is older than 10 years, consider replacing it with a new air conditioner.
