If you missed “How To Choose An Air Conditioner: Part 1,” you can catch up here! Over the course of these two blogs, we are here to inform you on the various features different units offer, and how to choose which one is best for your home. We discussed size and controls in Part 1, so let’s dig into specifics in Part 2!

Filters

Your filter should be replaced every 3-4 weeks during the cooling season. For this reason, you should check the AC units you’re shopping for to see how easy (or hard) it is to replace the filter. If it is hard for you to reach or replace, the less likely you are to do it. Try to find one that simply slides up and down without any screws or other fasteners.

Energy Efficiency

Your next consideration should be energy efficiency. Current models are up to 30% more efficient than what they were just 10 years ago. Manufacturers are required to list the energy rating directly on the unit, making an easy determination of energy efficiency. The EER, or Energy Efficiency Ratio, is the cooling capacity divided by the electrical power required to run the unit. The higher the number, the better. Any unit with an EER above 10 is extremely efficient. Of course, with a higher EER also comes a higher price tag.

Energy Star

If you have done any research on how to choose an air conditioner, or if you’ve even examined one closely, you may have seen the red Energy Star logo. What does this mean? The Energy Star program was created by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency to award the most efficient appliances on the market. If you see that red logo, that means it is certified to be 15% more efficient than those meeting the minimum federal requirements.

When To Buy

Like most other household items, there is a “best time” to buy air conditioners. Many stores or companies hold sales during off-peak times. Consumers can save as much as 25% if they buy a new unit before the first heat wave hits (or before the start of summer).

At D&D, we are here for ALL of your air conditioner needs. From how to choose an AC, to repair tips, and even how to cut energy costs, we want to give you all the information you need to make your home the most comfortable it can be. Because at D&D, your comfort is our priority.
