Mystery To Most

The plumbing throughout a home is a mystery to most. Water comes in and goes out, but how does this process work? Knowing the ins and outs of your plumbing system can help you save yourself time, money, and trouble!

There are two separate subsystems to your home plumbing system. One brings fresh water in, and the other takes wastewater out. The water that comes in is under pressure to allow it to travel where it’s needed. To stop this water coming in, there is a stop valve. This valve is typically located close to the water meter, which registers the amount of water you use. In a plumbing emergency, it is important to know where the stop valve is located in order to stop the water supply. However, if the emergency is simply confined to a toilet, sink, or tub, it may not be necessary to turn off your entire water supply.

The water that comes in from this main supply is cold and can therefore be used for your cold-water needs. However, heating the water requires another step from your hot water heater. A pipe carries cold water to the water heater, where it is heated. A thermostat maintains the temperature of the device, by turning on the hot water heater’s heating elements as needed. The temperature of the thermostat is usually set somewhere between 140-160 degrees Fahrenheit. However, 120 degrees Fahrenheit is usually adequate, as well as costs less to maintain. After the water is heated, a line carries the hot water to the fixtures that require hot water.
